PDP Faces Collapse Without Urgent Reforms, Warns Fayose

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has raised concerns about the future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that the party is in deep crisis and risks becoming a “political carcass” if urgent corrective actions are not taken.

Speaking in a statement made available to the press on Tuesday, Fayose described the PDP as being on the brink of political irrelevance due to internal disunity, weak leadership, and a lack of connection with the grassroots.

He called for immediate reforms to rescue the party from further decline.

“The PDP is in serious trouble. If we do not act fast, this party may soon become a political carcass — an empty shell. The signs are obvious, and pretending otherwise is political self-deception,” Fayose said.

Fayose, known for his outspoken political commentary, accused the PDP of repeatedly making avoidable mistakes and failing to learn from past defeats.

He said the party’s current trajectory is unsustainable and could lead to total collapse ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He lamented that personal ambition, infighting, and leadership struggles have taken precedence over unity and the collective interests of the party.

According to him, the PDP must urgently realign with its founding values and re-establish a strong grassroots presence.

“There must be a reset. We need leaders with courage and sincerity — not opportunists who see the party as a platform for personal gain. We must go back to the people, rebuild our structures, and reconnect with the base. Only then can we be taken seriously again,” he said.

Fayose also called for a complete overhaul of the PDP’s leadership structure and advocated for inclusive, transparent party processes that would restore confidence among party members and the electorate.

His comments come amid increasing calls from within the party for reforms and greater cohesion.

The PDP, which ruled Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, has faced a series of electoral defeats and internal crises in recent years, raising questions about its viability as the main opposition party.

Fayose’s warning adds to the growing pressure on the party’s leadership to undertake urgent steps toward reconciliation and revival.

With the next general elections approaching, the PDP faces a crucial test of its ability to reorganize and present itself as a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
