APC, PDP Must Ensure Nigeria Works, Says Sowunmi

A chieftainof the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Chief Segun Sowunmi, has called on political stakeholders in Nigeria—particularly the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP—to exert every effort to ensure the nation’s success and surmount its numerous challenges.

Addressing a virtual Business Meeting organized by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Ogun State Chapter, Sowunmi underscored the necessity of a unified national endeavor as Nigeria commemorates 26 years of unbroken democratic governance.

In his discourse on the theme, “Politics and Public Relations: Assessing Our Democratic Journey as a Nation,” the former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, articulated:

“We possess but one nation, and we must do all within our power to ensure its viability,” he said.

He lauded Nigeria’s democratic fortitude, observing that despite its flaws, the Fourth Republic has persisted longer than any of its predecessors.

“Even though more qualified individuals could not sustain the First, Second, or Third Republics, this one—though not governed by the most sagacious philosophers—has endured 26 years. We must have acquired some wisdom or abandoned certain detrimental habits,” he said.

Showunmi highlighted the pivotal role of leadership and public confidence, noting that socio-economic issues such as insurgency and kidnapping are exacerbated by poverty and the lavish lifestyles of political elites.

“Poverty alone does not drive individuals to crime. They become emboldened when they witness leaders living extravagantly. This incites a desire to emulate them—by any means necessary,” he said.

Contrasting the two major parties, Showunmi conceded that the APC had excelled in crafting persuasive, stylized political communication, while the PDP struggled to garner public empathy—even when harboring noble intentions.

“The aim of a PR manager must be credibility. My party, the PDP, must first cease its internal hemorrhaging. They need to engage professionals and welcome external consultants who can propose meaningful reforms.”

“Our adversaries, the APC, have mastered the art of perception. That’s why they often escape scrutiny, while the PDP frequently fails to garner public sympathy—even when making significant efforts,” he stated.

He concluded by urging public relations professionals to assume a more active role in politics, emphasizing that effective PR is crucial to good governance and shaping national discourse.

Earlier, in her welcome address, NIPR Ogun State Chairman, Mrs. Oluwaseun Boye, extolled the chapter’s dedication, which earned them the Diamond Anniversary Engagement Award at the 2025 Nigeria Public Relations Week held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

“This esteemed recognition is not merely a plaque—it is a testament to our resilience, consistency, and shared commitment to the ideals of our profession,” she stated.

Boye also accentuated the significance of the June Business Meeting, describing it as a valuable opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic progress and the critical role of public relations in national development.
