Tobi Amusan Runs Season-Best 11.18s to Finish Fourth in 100m at Jamaica Racers Grand Prix

Nigerian sprint and hurdles sensation, Tobi Amusan delivered an impressive performance on the flat track at the prestigious Racers Grand Prix on Saturday evening, clocking a season-best time of 11.18 seconds in the women’s 100 meters final.

The effort earned her a respectable fourth-place finish against a highly competitive field at Kingston’s National Stadium.

Primarily known for her dominance in the 100m hurdles, where she holds the world record, Amusan has been steadily expanding her focus to include the flat sprints. This appearance marked only her second 100m race of the season and her third in the past 14 months, signaling a deliberate shift to improve her raw speed on the straightaway.

Under the guidance of legendary sprint coach Glen Mills, famed for coaching Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake, Amusan has been training with the renowned Racers Track Club since November 2024.

The move appears to be paying dividends, as she shaved a significant 0.10 seconds off her previous season best of 11.28 seconds, set earlier this year at the Velocity Fest in March.

The 100m final was a thrilling contest. Jamaica’s Tina Clayton surged to victory with a blazing 10.98 seconds (+1.8 m/s wind), followed by American sprinter Jacious Sears who crossed the line in 11.04 seconds. Jamaican rising star Alana Reid claimed third place with a time of 11.16 seconds, just ahead of Amusan.

Amusan started well off the blocks with a reaction time of 0.198 seconds and maintained competitive pace throughout the race, demonstrating both her sprinting talent and determination.

This performance underscores Amusan’s growing versatility as she balances her hurdles expertise with sprint speed. The improvement in her flat 100m times is expected to enhance her overall racing arsenal as she prepares for the upcoming track and field season, including major meets on the Continental Tour and the Diamond League circuit.

Looking ahead, all eyes will be on Amusan as she aims to build momentum towards the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she is expected to contend in both hurdles and sprint events.

While she narrowly missed out on a podium finish in Jamaica, her season-best run is a clear sign of progress and an exciting development for Nigerian athletics fans hoping to see her continue breaking barriers on the global stage.
