Tinubu to Confer Honours on Lawmakers in Commomeration of June 12

In a significant celebration of Nigeria’s democratic journey, President Bola Tinubu is set to confer national honours on selected legislators on June 12, marking the country’s Democracy Day.

According to a statement released by the House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi Jr., on Sunday, the President will be the special guest of honour at a Special Joint Sitting of the National Assembly, where he will address the legislators.

The event, which will take place on Thursday, June 12, will also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly, as well as the conferment of national honours on select legislators by the President.

This year’s Democracy Day celebration is themed “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development,” and is expected to be a moment of reflection, renewed patriotism, and commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.

The House spokesman, Rotimi, emphasized the significance of the joint sitting, stating that it underscores the pivotal role of the National Assembly in safeguarding democratic values, fostering accountability, and advancing national development over the past 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule.

“We urge Nigerians to embrace the spirit of Democracy Day as a time for reflection, renewed patriotism, and commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation,” Rotimi said.

The event is expected to be a major milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, and will be attended by the leadership and members of the House of Representatives, as well as other dignitaries.

As the country celebrates 26 years of democracy, President Tinubu’s decision to confer national honours on select legislators is seen as a gesture of appreciation for their contributions to the country’s democratic development.

The event is expected to be widely covered by local and international media, and will be an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s progress and look forward to a brighter future.
