FG Declares June 12 Public Holiday to Mark Democracy Day

The Federal Government has announced that Thursday will be a public holiday to commemorate the 2025 Democracy Day celebration.

This was disclosed in a statement released by the Ministry of Interior’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Magdalene Ajani, on Sunday.

According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, declared the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulating Nigerians on 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule. The Minister noted that June 12 marks a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards building a nation founded on truth, justice, and peace.

“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign and peace is sustained and our future assured. The last 26 years tell the story of our resilience, strength, and courage, and a hope renewed than ever,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo said.

The Minister also reiterated the commitment of the Renewed Hope government of President Bola Tinubu to upholding the universal values of democracy, which is based on the freely-expressed will of the people in determining Nigeria’s political, economic, social, and cultural systems.

The public holiday is expected to give Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and the progress made so far. It is also a time for citizens to come together and celebrate the nation’s resilience and strength in the face of challenges.

The Federal Government has urged all Nigerians to use the holiday to promote unity, peace, and stability, and to work towards a brighter future for the country. With the declaration of the public holiday, all federal offices and institutions will be closed on Thursday, and normal activities are expected to resume on Friday.
