University of Benin Inducts 158 into Science Laboratory Technology Profession

The University of Benin (UNIBEN), in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT), has officially inducted 158 graduates from its Department of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) into professional practice.

The induction ceremony took place on Wednesday at the university’s Ugbowo Campus and marked a major milestone in the academic and professional development of the new technologists.

The inductees, drawn from nine specialized areas within the SLT program, took the Professional Oath of Practice administered by the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of NISLT, Mr. Yemi Gbadegesin.

This formal induction qualifies the graduates to begin their careers as certified science laboratory technologists, ready to contribute to the advancement of scientific research, innovation, and healthcare in Nigeria.

“This induction is not just ceremonial—it is a legal and ethical gateway into a profession that demands the highest level of integrity, skill, and commitment to national development,” said Mr. Gbadegesin during his keynote address.

Mr. Gbadegesin commended UNIBEN for its long-standing commitment to the development of the science laboratory technology profession, highlighting significant contributions such as providing permanent space for NISLT’s South-South Zonal Office within the university and its plans to establish a postgraduate SLT program.

He noted that such institutional support not only elevates the university’s profile but also ensures the continued professionalization of laboratory sciences across Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, Prof. N.J.E. Orhue, Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, reiterated the university’s ongoing efforts to upgrade the Department of SLT into a full-fledged faculty, with ambitions to commence postgraduate training to meet the growing demand for specialized technologists in research, medicine, and industry.

“Our graduates are not only job-ready but are equipped to be innovators in diagnostic science, biotechnology, environmental monitoring, and beyond,” Prof. Orhue stated.

In his remarks, Dr. Jude Osarumwense, Head of the Department of SLT, congratulated the graduates and reminded them of the responsibilities attached to their new professional status.

“This is not just a title—it is a trust bestowed on you by the public and the scientific community. Uphold it with professionalism, excellence, and integrity,” he charged.

The Edo State Chairman of the Association of Science Laboratory Technologists of Nigeria (ASLTON), Mr. Efe Omoruyi, encouraged the new technologists to actively participate in the association’s programs, emphasizing the importance of continuous professional development and collaboration.

He described the induction as a critical first step into a lifelong journey of learning, service, and contribution to scientific progress in Nigeria and beyond.

The induction ceremony was not only a rite of passage but also a powerful statement about the University of Benin’s role in shaping the future of laboratory science in Nigeria. With the support of regulatory bodies like NISLT and professional groups like ASLTON, the newly inducted technologists are poised to make impactful contributions in fields ranging from biomedical research to industrial quality control.
