Trump vs Musk: Alliance Shatters Over Policy Clash
President Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on Elon Musk, expressing “deep disappointment” with the tech mogul after Musk publicly criticized Trump’s sweeping domestic policy package, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
The rupture marks a dramatic shift in what was once a powerful alliance between two of America’s most influential figures. Musk, who played a key role in Trump’s 2024 campaign and even led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), slammed the bill as a “disgusting abomination.”
He argued that the legislation would balloon the national debt and gut electric vehicle subsidies, threatening the future of Tesla and other clean energy ventures.
Trump didn’t take kindly to the remarks. Speaking to reporters in Florida, he claimed Musk’s criticism was rooted in “selfish business interests,” accusing the billionaire of prioritizing profit over patriotism.
“Elon knew exactly what was in that bill. Now he’s playing victim because it doesn’t serve his bottom line,” Trump said.
Musk, however, maintains he was blindsided. In a post on X, he denied being briefed on the bill’s final contents and hinted at brewing betrayal: “I believed in government reform. What I didn’t sign up for was crony capitalism in disguise.”
The fallout has already begun to sting. Tesla shares plummeted over 14% amid the public spat, and Trump has reportedly ordered a review of all federal contracts with Musk-affiliated companies, including SpaceX.
Insiders say the rift may have lasting political consequences. Musk has begun floating the idea of launching a centrist movement that would challenge both Republican orthodoxy and progressive extremes a move that could redraw the political map ahead of 2028.
For now, one thing is clear: the bromance that once shook Silicon Valley and Washington is over and the breakup is anything but quiet.
