Tinubu Inaugurates 180 Megawatts Afam II Power Plant

President Bola Tinubu has officially launched the 180-megawatt Afam II Power Plant in Oyigbo, Rivers State.

 

This project was undertaken by Sahara Power Group, Africa’s largest private power company, in conjunction with Crescendough Nigeria Limited, highlighting the vital role of collaboration between the private sector and government in driving sustainable energy solutions.

 

The power plant, which was completed in a record 16 months using predominantly Nigerian expertise, is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the country’s energy landscape.

 

President Tinubu, who inaugurated the plant remotely, praised the project as a major boost to the national grid, emphasizing its potential to energize homes, businesses, and industries, thereby stimulating economic growth.

 

The President commended the Rivers State Government for its vision and support in enabling the project, as well as the private sector partners, including Sahara Power Group, First Independent Power Limited, and Crescendough Nigeria Limited, for their investment and expertise.

 

He noted that the successful completion of the project demonstrates Nigeria’s capacity to overcome challenges through collaboration and determination.

 

Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering sustainable energy solutions through collaboration and strategic investments.

 

He highlighted the significance of the Afam II project, which is expected to catalyze productivity, drive job creation, and promote sustainable development in Nigeria.

 

Adesina also noted that Sahara Power is Nigeria’s largest private power business, contributing over 20% of the country’s power generation through its subsidiaries, Egbin Power and First Independent Power Limited.

 

He expressed the company’s vision for a Nigeria that is fully transformed and globally competitive, empowered by sustainable power solutions.

 

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, congratulated Sahara Group and its partners on the successful completion of the project, praising their confidence in the state’s economy and their commitment to indigenous enterprise.

 

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, described the project as a significant milestone, while Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, pledged his ministry’s collaboration with the power ministry to address gas supply challenges and boost power sustainability in Nigeria.
