Netflix to Jack up Monthly Subscription Fee in Nigeria to ₦8,500 Starting July 4th, 2025

Netflix is reportedly set to increase the cost of its monthly subscription in Nigeria to ₦8,500, effective July 4th, 2025, according to posts circulating widely on social media, particularly on the platform X (formerly Twitter).
As of June 2025, Netflix offers four primary plans in Nigeria:
• Mobile Plan – ₦1,600/month
• Basic Plan – ₦2,900/month
• Standard Plan – ₦4,000/month
• Premium Plan – ₦5,000–₦7,000/month (after a price increase in July 2024)
If confirmed, the ₦8,500 fee would mark the highest pricing tier in Nigeria to date, likely affecting the Premium Plan—which offers Ultra HD resolution and allows streaming on up to four devices simultaneously.
Despite the widespread online reports, Netflix has not issued an official statement confirming the price hike. The company typically announces changes through its app, email notifications, or press releases.
Major Nigerian media outlets such as Nairametrics, which reported on Netflix’s last confirmed price adjustment in 2024, have not yet corroborated this new claim.
In July 2024, Netflix raised its Premium Plan by 40%, from ₦5,000 to ₦7,000, citing inflationary pressures and operational costs. Since then, Nigeria’s fluctuating exchange rates and rising digital service taxes have continued to impact pricing structures for streaming platforms.
The reported increase has sparked reactions across social media, with many Nigerian users voicing concern about affordability.
“At this rate, Netflix is going to price itself out of the Nigerian market,” one user wrote, while others suggested switching to local alternatives or sharing accounts.
Until Netflix confirms the update, subscribers are advised to:
• Monitor official Netflix channels (website, app notifications, or verified social media accounts)
• Check their email for any changes to billing or pricing terms
• Consider adjusting their subscription plan or exploring multi-user options
Netflix, which launched officially in Nigeria in 2016, remains one of the country’s most popular streaming services, despite rising competition and ongoing concerns about affordability in the digital entertainment market.
