Mikel Obi: “It’d Be a Shame If Osimhen Moves to Saudi”

Former Super Eagles captain and Chelsea legend, John Obi Mikel, has expressed serious concern over reports that Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen could be on the verge of making a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League.

Mikel, speaking in a recent interview, said such a decision at this stage of Osimhen’s career would be disappointing.

“It would be a shame if Victor moves to Saudi Arabia at this stage. He has the potential to become one of the best strikers in the world, and playing in Europe will provide him with the platform to achieve that,” Mikel said.

Victor Osimhen, 26, has continued to rise in global football prominence following a remarkable season. While widely associated with Napoli in Italy, recent reports also highlight a dominant stint with Galatasaray, where he netted 26 goals in 30 league games and added 11 more in the Europa League and Turkish Cup.

His explosive form has drawn attention from top European clubs including Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United. However, the most aggressive interest is said to be coming from Saudi Arabia, particularly Al-Hilal, who recently failed in their attempt to sign Bruno Fernandes from Manchester United.

Mikel emphasized that while financial offers from the Middle East are tempting, they could come at the expense of competitive development.

“Financial incentives are tempting, but at 26, Victor should prioritize his development and the quality of football he engages with,” he added.

The former Nigerian midfielder, who played at the highest levels of European football for over a decade, believes that Osimhen should focus on clubs that offer top-tier competition, global exposure, and a pathway to greater legacy in the game.

Mikel revealed that he has been in touch with Osimhen, offering guidance as he navigates this critical phase of his career.

“Victor is still young and has time to win trophies, play in the Champions League, and cement his name among football’s elite. Going to Saudi now might limit those opportunities,” Mikel stressed.

He also hinted that such a move could influence Osimhen’s rhythm and readiness for international duties, including major tournaments like the AFCON and FIFA World Cup.

With the European transfer window now open, all eyes are on Osimhen’s next move. While the financial allure of Saudi clubs is undeniable—with players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema already in the league—football pundits and fans alike hope Osimhen stays in Europe to continue proving himself against the world’s best.

For now, the striker remains tight-lipped on his decision, but his next move could define the trajectory of what many see as a golden career in the making.
