Gov. Otti Hails Abia-Born Immigration Officer for Rejecting N10m Bribe, Describes Him as True Patriot
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has commended an Abia-born immigration officer, Ugochukwu Prince Orji, for rejecting a N10 million bribe while on duty, describing him as a true patriot and exemplary ambassador of the state.
The governor’s praise came during a reception held in his honour by a 30-man delegation of organisers and sponsors of the Oha Isiala Ngwa Grand Civic Reception/Appreciation, where he was recognised for his leadership strides in Isiala Ngwa and across the state.
Governor Otti lauded Orji’s integrity and courage, saying his action reflects the values that Abians are known for – honesty, diligence, and a strong work ethic. He noted that Orji’s decision to reject the bribe was a testament to the fact that there are still many good and honest people in the country who are committed to doing the right thing, even in the face of temptation.
“You have done your job excellently and shown that you are not just a good ambassador of Isiala Ngwa and Abia State, but of Nigeria as a whole.
“What you did is typical of us. We are straightforward people. We don’t steal, we don’t cheat. Yes, there may be a Judas among every 12, but the good must not be drowned out,” Governor Otti said.
The governor’s comments were made in reference to the widespread perception that corruption is a major problem in Nigeria, and that many public officials are prone to accepting bribes and engaging in other forms of corrupt practices. However, Governor Otti’s praise for Orji suggests that there are still many honest and hardworking public officials who are committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
Governor Otti also noted that Abians are industrious people who work hard to earn a decent living and would naturally reject dubious gifts.
He recalled how he recently honoured a Keke rider who returned a large sum of forgotten cash to its owner, saying that Orji would receive similar recognition for his exemplary conduct.
The governor’s decision to recognise and reward Orji for his integrity is seen as a significant step in promoting a culture of transparency and accountability in Abia State.
It is also expected to serve as a motivation to other public officials to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism, and to reject any form of corruption or unethical behaviour.
The rejection of the N10 million bribe by Orji has been widely praised by Nigerians, with many calling for him to be rewarded and recognised for his integrity.
The incident has also sparked a national conversation about the importance of integrity and transparency in public service, and the need for more to be done to promote a culture of accountability and good governance in the country.
As the news of Orji’s action continues to inspire Nigerians, Governor Otti has urged other public officials to emulate his example, saying that it is only by upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism that we can build a better future for ourselves and our children.
“I urge all public officials to emulate the example of Mr. Orji and uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism
. “Together, we can build a better future for ourselves and our children, and create a society that is just, fair, and equitable for all,” Governor Otti said.
The recognition of Orji’s integrity is also seen as a significant step in promoting the values of honesty, diligence, and hard work that Abians are known for.
It is expected to serve as a motivation to other Abians to uphold these values and to strive for excellence in their various fields of endeavour.
In a statement, the Abia State Government said that it would continue to recognise and reward public officials who uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism, and that it would do everything possible to promote a culture of transparency and accountability in the state.
“We are committed to promoting a culture of transparency and accountability in Abia State, and we will continue to recognise and reward public officials who uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
“We believe that this is essential for building a better future for ourselves and our children, and for creating a society that is just, fair, and equitable for all,” the statement said.
