Peter Obi Visits Flood-Ravaged Niger State, Pledges ₦20m Support for Victims

The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has visited Niger State to condole with victims and authorities following the devastating flash floods that ravaged Mokwa Local Government Area, killing over 153 people and displacing thousands.

Obi, who was accompanied by former minister Nenadi Usman and spokesperson Yunusa Tanko, traveled to the state to show solidarity with the people affected by the disaster. He was received by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, who represented Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Obi revealed that he had earlier contacted Governor Bago from the United Kingdom to extend his condolences, before making the trip in person.

“Today, along with @SenNenadiUsman and Dr @YunusaTanko, I travelled to Niger State to condole and show solidarity with the Governor and the good people of the state over the devastating floods in the Mokwa area,” he wrote.

During his visit, Obi had a discussion with the Deputy Governor about the urgent needs of the affected communities, where over 200 lives have been lost, about 1,000 persons are still missing, more than 3,000 people have been displaced from their homes, and several homes destroyed.

The 63-year-old politician also announced a ₦20 million donation as part of his commitment to supporting recovery efforts in the state.

“As part of my commitment to stand with the people of Niger State during this difficult time, I made an initial donation of ₦20 million to support the effort of the government, and I will continue to support their effort,” Obi said.

Obi’s visit and donation are seen as a gesture of goodwill and solidarity with the people of Niger State, who are struggling to come to terms with the devastating impact of the floods. The Labour Party presidential candidate has been known for his philanthropic efforts and commitment to supporting vulnerable communities.

The floods in Mokwa Local Government Area have been described as one of the worst disasters to hit the state in recent years, with thousands of people affected and millions of naira worth of property destroyed. The state government has appealed for support from the federal government, international organizations, and private individuals to help with the relief efforts.

Obi’s donation of ₦20 million is expected to provide some relief to the affected communities, and his visit is seen as a morale booster for the people of Niger State. The Labour Party presidential candidate has urged Nigerians to come together to support the victims of the floods and to work towards preventing such disasters in the future.

The visit has also sparked reactions from Nigerians on social media, with many praising Obi for his kindness and generosity. Others have called on the federal government and other politicians to follow Obi’s example and provide support to the affected communities.

As the people of Niger State continue to grapple with the aftermath of the floods, Obi’s visit and donation are seen as a beacon of hope and a reminder that there are still good Samaritans who care about the welfare of others.
