Patrice Motsepe’s Net Worth Soars by $200 Million in May, Reaffirming His Position Among Africa’s Wealthiest

South African billionaire and mining magnate, Patrice Motsepe, widely recognized as Africa’s first Black billionaire, has seen a substantial increase in his fortune, with his net worth rising by $200 million in May 2025.

This boost brings his estimated wealth to approximately $3.2 billion, according to Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaire tracker.

The surge is largely attributed to the strong performance of African Rainbow Minerals (ARM), the diversified mining company Motsepe founded and currently chairs.

With investments in key sectors such as platinum, iron ore, coal, gold, and copper, ARM has benefited significantly from rising global commodity prices and investor optimism.

Motsepe owns a 39.7% stake in the company, which remains the foundation of his wealth.

In addition to mining, Motsepe’s investments span across multiple sectors through his firm Ubuntu-Botho Investments and its financial services arm, African Rainbow Capital (ARC).

These include major holdings in TymeBank, one of South Africa’s fastest-growing digital banks, as well as stakes in telecommunications, insurance, renewable energy, and agriculture.

His diversified investment strategy has played a key role in maintaining and growing his wealth in the face of fluctuating markets.

Motsepe also holds a prominent role in African sports. Since 2021, he has served as President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), where he has led initiatives aimed at increasing transparency and investment in the continent’s football ecosystem.

He is also the owner of Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, which recently secured another domestic league title, further enhancing his influence in African sports.

A strong advocate for philanthropy, Motsepe and his family committed to donating half of their wealth through the Giving Pledge initiated by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett.

The Motsepe Foundation continues to support education, health, and rural development programs across South Africa.

Motsepe’s recent financial gains come at a time when South Africa’s economy is navigating complex challenges and opportunities.

His success story—rising from modest beginnings in Soweto to become one of Africa’s most influential business leaders—continues to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs across the continent.

With commodity markets showing sustained strength and his investments maturing across diverse sectors, analysts expect Motsepe’s net worth to maintain its upward trajectory in the months ahead.
