North Must Support South West to Promote Unity in 2027, Says Shehu Sani

Former senator and civil rights activist, Shehu Sani, has called on Northern Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and support the South West in retaining the presidency for a second term come 2027.

According to Sani, such a gesture would reinforce national unity, equity, and political reciprocity in Nigeria’s democratic landscape.

In a statement made during a recent media interaction, Sani emphasized that President Tinubu, who hails from the South West, deserves the opportunity to complete an eight-year term, following the tradition of two-term presidencies.

“The North has enjoyed the support of the South West in the past,” Sani noted, citing the examples of Presidents Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari.

“It is only fair and just that the North returns the favor by supporting President Tinubu’s continuation in office, he said.

The former senator from Kaduna State expressed concern over certain Northern political figures who, he claimed, are attempting to stir discontent among the Northern populace by unfairly criticizing the current administration.

He accused these politicians of exploiting tribal sentiments to serve personal ambitions rather than focusing on the broader interest of national development.

“Many of those now pointing fingers at President Tinubu had their chance to transform the North but failed. They should not mislead the people now that they are out of power,” he said.

Sani also pointed to recent improvements in security and infrastructure across parts of the North, particularly in Kaduna State, as evidence that progress is being made under the Tinubu-led administration.

While acknowledging that issues like banditry and poverty remain persistent, Sani argued that the current government has made more meaningful strides compared to its predecessors.

He highlighted the fact that many strategic positions in the federal government are still held by Northerners, ensuring that the region is not marginalized.

“This administration has not sidelined the North. Instead, it has continued to include Northerners in key positions of authority,” he added.

Sani concluded his remarks by urging Northerners to prioritize national stability over regional or ethnic interests, warning against political manipulation aimed at disrupting the country’s fragile cohesion.
