Kebbi State Government Pledges Support for Great Green Wall Project

The Kebbi State Government has reiterated its commitment to supporting the National Agency for the Great Green Wall Project, aimed at rehabilitating, regenerating, and conserving the state’s dryland ecosystem.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by a team from the National Agency for the Great Green Wall and the United Nations Environment Programme, State Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, assured that the state government will provide the necessary backing for the project’s success.

The team, led by Director of Afforestation and Land Management of the Agency, Ahmed Majidadi Bagudo, was received by the Deputy Governor at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi.

According to Senator Tafida, the state government will honor the Agency’s request to issue a Project Commitment Letter, allocate suitable land parcels for ecosystem restoration and demonstration plots, and direct relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to collaborate with the project team.

The Deputy Governor emphasized that the Great Green Wall Project, if implemented, would address the state’s ecological challenges, such as desertification, soil erosion, and loss of biodiversity, and promote sustainable development.

“We are committed to supporting this project, as it aligns with our administration’s vision to protect the environment, promote sustainable development, and improve the livelihoods of our people,” Senator Tafida said.

The Great Green Wall Project is a regional initiative aimed at combating desertification, promoting sustainable land management, and improving the livelihoods of communities in the Sahel region.

The Kebbi State Government’s commitment to the project is expected to facilitate the implementation of the Integrated Dryland Ecosystem Rehabilitation, Regeneration, and Conservation in the state, which will have a positive impact on the environment, economy, and social well-being of the people.

With the state government’s support, the project is expected to create jobs, improve food security, and enhance the resilience of communities to climate change.

The visit by the National Agency for the Great Green Wall and the United Nations Environment Programme team is a significant step towards the implementation of the project in Kebbi State, and the state government’s commitment is a welcome development in the quest to protect the environment and promote sustainable development in the region.
