NOA Warns Car Dealer Against Disparaging Statements Against Civil Servants

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has issued a stern warning to a prominent auto dealer, Sarkin Mota, over his recent comments that were deemed condescending towards civil servants.

In a statement released yesterday, the Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, expressed disappointment over a viral video in which Sarkin Mota appeared to mock the financial capabilities of civil servants.

The video showed Sarkin Mota asking the AI functionality of a 2023 Mercedes Benz C300 if civil servants could afford the vehicle, to which the AI responded, “No, maybe in 2062.”

Sarkin Mota’s comments were widely criticized, with many Nigerians taking to social media to express their outrage. The NOA, in its response, stated that such comments were unacceptable, especially at a time when Nigerians are facing significant social and economic pressures.

“At a time when Nigerians are passing through so much social pressure and in an environment where get rich at all cost syndrome is pervasive and material things are being promoted over and above dignity of labour and decent values, it is wrong to be speaking in such condescending terms about Nigerian civil servants,” Issa-Onilu said.

The NOA DG emphasized the importance of civil servants in driving the country’s development, stating that they work hard to provide an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. “To be a civil servant in Nigeria, as is the case in most countries of the world, is a very important role. Civil servants across sectors are the ones who work hard to provide enabling environment for businesses like yours to thrive and prosper,” he said.

Issa-Onilu cautioned Sarkin Mota to be mindful of his words, urging him to avoid hurting the sensibilities of any segment of Nigerians. “We have taken the trouble to respond based on the feedback we are getting from many people who have watched your video skit on the 2023 C300 Mercedes Benz. Kindly please take note,” he said.

The NOA’s warning is seen as a significant step towards promoting respect and dignity for all Nigerians, regardless of their profession or socio-economic status. As the country continues to navigate its economic challenges, the agency’s message serves as a reminder of the importance of valuing the contributions of all citizens, including civil servants.

In a statement, the NOA reiterated its commitment to building a resilient country where every cadre of citizen can thrive and be respected. “Please accept the assurance of my best wishes as we work together to build a resilient country where every cadre of citizen can thrive and be respected, a Nigeria where dignity of labour is valued over and above material things,” Issa-Onilu said.
