Lagos State Joins Forces with Insurance Firm to Combat Violence Against Girls

In a bid to tackle the growing concern of domestic and sexual violence against girls in Nigeria, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has teamed up with AXA Mansard, a leading insurance company.

The partnership aims to raise awareness and educate the public about the devastating impact of these crimes on young girls.

Olusesan Ogunyooye, Head of Marketing at AXA Mansard Insurance Plc, emphasized the importance of a collective approach to combating gender-based violence, involving individuals, communities, institutions, and governments.

He noted that the company’s commitment to protecting the future of children is at the forefront of their corporate social responsibility efforts.

AXA Mansard’s collaboration with the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) is part of their annual global CSR week, AXA Week for Good.

The company recognizes the remarkable work being done by the DSVA to combat domestic and sexual violence in Lagos and sees this partnership as an opportunity to support their efforts.

According to a 2014 national survey, one in four girls in Nigeria experience sexual violence before the age of 18, resulting in unintended pregnancies and long-term trauma. Ogunyooye described these statistics as alarming, highlighting the need for urgent action to prevent such crimes.

The theme of this year’s AXA Week for Good, “Being a Girl Shouldn’t Be a Risk,” aims to shed light on the impact of sexual and domestic violence on young girls.

The partnership with DSVA is a significant step towards addressing this critical issue and promoting a safer, more inclusive society.

Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of DSVA, welcomed the collaboration, stating that partnerships with the private sector are essential in amplifying the Lagos State Government’s zero-tolerance stance on sexual and gender-based violence.

She expressed her commitment to working with AXA Mansard to create meaningful impact and contribute to the broader goal of fostering a safer environment for all.
