Kate Henshaw Upbraids Legal Support for Inequality Against Women

Renowned actress Kate Henshaw has spoken out against the persistent inequality faced by women in Nigeria, criticising both societal attitudes and legal frameworks that reinforce gender bias.
In a passionate appeal, Henshaw argued that women were created as equals to men, referencing the biblical creation story where God created woman from the side of man, not from his head or feet.
According to Henshaw, this principle of equality has been distorted by cultural and legal norms, contributing to longstanding gender disparity in Nigeria.
She pointed to specific laws that institutionalise discrimination, such as citizenship provisions that favour foreign women married to Nigerian men, while denying the same rights to foreign men married to Nigerian women.
Henshaw also condemned aspects of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law, which permit men to “reasonably chastise” their wives.
She described such clauses as enablers of domestic abuse, stating that they perpetuate the notion that women are less than human.
The actress called for urgent legal reforms to ensure equal rights and protection for women under Nigerian law.
She argued that the current laws and societal attitudes towards women are not only unjust but also undermine the dignity and worth of women.
Henshaw’s comments have sparked a wave of support on social media, with many Nigerians calling for an end to gender-based discrimination and violence.
The actress’s advocacy for women’s rights has been praised by many, who see her as a powerful voice for change in Nigeria.
