Chief Onitiri, Warns Politicians Against Actions that Can Destabilise Nigeria

A respected voice in Nigeria’s political landscape, Chief Adesunbo Onitiri, has cautioned influential figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, and former governors Nasir el-Rufai and Peter Obi, to refrain from actions that may jeopardize the nation’s stability ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a recent address from Lagos, Onitiri appealed to these key national figures to demonstrate greater moderation and loyalty to the country in their political endeavors.
He emphasized that heightened tensions may undermine the nation’s democratic foundations.
Drawing from his experience as a pro-democracy activist during the 1993-1994 struggle against military rule, Onitiri expressed concern that certain politicians may inadvertently create opportunities for undemocratic elements to exploit.
He specifically took issue with Atiku Abubakar’s alleged plan to involve a US court in disqualifying President Bola Tinubu, characterizing it as a move that may be perceived as counterproductive by many Nigerians.
Onitiri emphasized that committed democrats cannot remain passive while the nation grapples with pressing issues like hunger and insecurity.
He urged the opposition to allow President Tinubu to concentrate on governance and delivering benefits to the people.
The elder statesman stressed that the current economic and security challenges require a united front across party lines. He called upon both the ruling All Progressives Congress and opposition leaders to put aside their differences and work collaboratively for the betterment of the Nigerian people.
Onitiri acknowledged the Federal Government’s efforts to address the economic and security issues it inherited since taking office in 2023, emphasizing the need for cooperation rather than division to effectively tackle these challenges.
