Nigerian Lawmakers Vow to Tackle Defections with Electoral Act Reforms

In a bid to stem the tide of politicians switching parties without relinquishing their seats, the National Assembly has pledged to expedite amendments to the Electoral Act.

This move is aimed at preserving the country’s democratic integrity, which has been threatened by the recent surge in defections.

Kamoru Ogunlana, Clerk of the National Assembly, reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to addressing this issue during a symposium held in honor of the Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies.

His remarks were in response to an appeal by Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, who emphasized the need for urgent action to prevent further defections.

Itodo’s concerns were echoed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who was represented by Senator Victor Umeh at the event.

Akpabio praised the leadership of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, acknowledging its role in shaping the skills of lawmakers.

The issue of defections has gained significant attention in recent times, with several high-profile politicians, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, switching to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

This trend has raised questions about the legitimacy of such moves, with Itodo arguing that individuals who defect should vacate their seats, as the Supreme Court has ruled that votes belong to parties, not individuals.

President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Reps Speaker Tajudeen Abbas have all been involved in the appointment of the Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, highlighting the importance of this role in shaping the country’s legislative landscape.
