National Security is Collective Duty,.Says Senate President Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has emphasized that national security is not the sole responsibility of the government and security agencies but a collective duty that requires the active involvement of all Nigerians.

Speaking at the sixth edition of the Timeline Awareness Initiative Lecture and Awards held in Lagos, Akpabio, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Constitutional and Legal Matters, Dr. Monday Ubani, stressed the need for unity, vigilance, and responsible communication in addressing the country’s security challenges.

Akpabio noted that in the face of growing insecurity, every Nigerian has a critical role to play in ensuring peace and stability.

“National security is a collective duty. Every Nigerian, regardless of status or profession, has a role to play in safeguarding the nation from threats—both internal and external,” he said.

He specifically called on media practitioners to approach their work with a strong sense of national responsibility. While recognizing the importance of press freedom, Akpabio warned that the reckless dissemination of sensitive information could aid criminal elements and undermine national efforts to combat insecurity.

“We must report the truth, but we must also be conscious of the implications of how and when we report,” he said.

Referencing his recent engagement with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Akpabio highlighted the role of science and technology in improving national security. At the agency’s 2025 Top Management Retreat in Uyo, he pledged the National Assembly’s continued support for NASRDA’s use of satellite technologies to enhance surveillance and intelligence-gathering across the country.

The event also saw the recognition of prominent Nigerians for their contributions to national development. Among those honored were Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, business magnate Aliko Dangote, and statesman Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, who received the Inspiring Leader and Philanthropic Icon Award.

Akpabio concluded by urging all citizens to support security agencies with timely and credible information and to avoid politicizing matters of national safety.

“Security is not just about guns and uniforms—it is about information, cooperation, and trust. We must work together, share responsibility, and recognize that a secure Nigeria benefits us all,” he said.
