Wike Pledges Major Reforms to Transform Abuja’s Transportation Sector

The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has unveiled an ambitious reform agenda aimed at overhauling Abuja’s public transportation system.

The reforms seek to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and modernize the city’s transport infrastructure to meet the demands of its growing population.

At a recent briefing, Wike highlighted the critical need to integrate the city’s roadside taxis into a unified and regulated transportation system. This initiative aims to create an organized environment that improves commuter safety and streamlines operations.

As part of the reform, authorities will standardize the colors of registered taxi vehicles, making them easily identifiable and enhancing security measures across the capital.

In line with the modernization plan, the newly constructed Kugbo and Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminals are set for inauguration.

These state-of-the-art terminals are designed to accommodate both buses and taxis, enabling seamless connectivity between different transport modes. Additionally, the administration plans to establish two more terminals in Bwari and Gwagwalada to expand the transport network and ease pressure on existing facilities.

Wike also announced efforts to drastically reduce the number of unregulated roadside motor parks, which currently contribute to traffic bottlenecks and pose security challenges.

The introduction of modern, centralized terminals is expected to streamline transportation activities and promote orderly traffic flow throughout Abuja.

Highlighting the role of local expertise, the Minister commended indigenous contractors who executed the terminal projects, pledging ongoing support for local contractors to ensure continued delivery of high-quality infrastructure across the FCT.

These reforms mark a decisive step toward creating a more efficient, secure, and accessible transportation system in Abuja. As the capital continues to expand, the government’s commitment to modernizing its transport infrastructure is expected to improve daily commutes and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
