Umuahia Streets Empty as Residents Stay Home to Commemorate Biafra Day

Umuahia, the capital city of Abia State, experienced eerily vacant thoroughfares on Friday as inhabitants remained ensconced within their homes, fully adhering to the sit-at-home directive issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB) in commemoration of fallen Biafra heroes.

The roads lay nearly abandoned, save for sporadic appearances of tricycles and a handful of vehicles. Shops lining the streets remained shuttered, while marketplaces and motor parks similarly ceased operations.

Banks, too, did not welcome customers, and schools, both private and public, remained closed to students and pupils alike.

A few youths were observed on the deserted streets engaging in soccer, while others congregated at the entrances of their residences, engaging in discourse over the latest national developments.

No security personnel were visible patrolling the streets, yet the city has thus far been spared any confrontations between security forces and the proponents of the sit-at-home directive.
