Keep an Eye on FCT Councils, Wike Charges N’Assembly

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has sounded a warning to the National Assembly to keep a watchful eye on the activities of the FCT area councils, particularly in light of the ongoing strike by primary school teachers.
The teachers are protesting unpaid allowances and entitlements, bringing education to a standstill in the region.
During an inspection of various projects in Abuja, Wike emphasized the need for legislative oversight, specifically tasking the House of Representatives Committee on FCT Area Council and Ancillary Matters to step in and resolve the strike.
He noted that as elected officials, the area council chairmen must be held accountable for their actions.
Wike expressed concern over the denial of education to children and has been engaging with the council chairmen to address the issue.
However, he believes the committee has a critical role to play in monitoring the area councils’ activities, rather than focusing solely on the FCT Administration.
The Minister criticized the committee’s approach, stating that they have been concentrating on the wrong areas, such as budget defense, rather than exercising their oversight function on the area councils.
He expected the committee chairman to summon the area council chairmen to discuss the strike and find a solution.
