NAPTIP Investigates Speed Darlington Over Viral Video Alleging Sexual Encounter with Minor

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has initiated an investigation into Nigerian entertainer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, following the emergence of a viral Instagram Live video. In the footage, the artist claimed to have engaged in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl, prompting widespread concern and outrage.

The video, which surfaced online on May 27, 2025, shows Speed Darlington describing an alleged encounter with a minor at a hotel, where he reportedly gave her ₦2,000 afterward.

The content has ignited a storm of reactions across social media platforms, with many condemning the alleged behavior and calling for legal action.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) initially responded to the incident, condemning the content of the video.

However, due to jurisdictional limitations—specifically, the location of the incident not being clearly established—the DSVA referred the matter to NAPTIP for further investigation.

In a statement, NAPTIP confirmed that its Cybercrime Response Team has commenced an inquiry into the video and related content.

The agency reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding children and investigating all forms of abuse and exploitation.

In the wake of mounting criticism, Speed Darlington issued an apology, claiming that the video was a publicity stunt designed to promote his new song.

He stated, “I needed controversy to eat. If you are not trending, you are not getting booked.”

Despite his attempt to clarify the situation, NAPTIP emphasized that the investigation remains serious, with potential legal ramifications, regardless of the entertainer’s motives or statements.

The agency has appealed to the public, urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to aid the ongoing investigation.

This incident underscores the importance of responsible content creation, especially when it involves sensitive issues such as minors and sexual conduct. It serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of making false or harmful statements online—consequences that can have serious legal and social implications.

As the investigation continues, all eyes remain on the case, highlighting Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat abuse, protect minors, and enforce laws against trafficking and exploitation.
