Fubara Calls for Healing, Unity Amid Political Crisis in Rivers State

Suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has made a passionate plea for peace, reconciliation, and healing amid ongoing political unrest that has shaken the state for several months. Speaking during a state-wide broadcast commemorating the second anniversary of his administration’s inauguration, Fubara urged Rivers people to move past the political tensions that have characterized his tenure and embrace a new chapter of unity and progress.

In his address titled “Let Us Turn the Page,” Governor Fubara acknowledged the trials his administration has faced but emphasized his determination to continue serving the people, despite the turbulence.

“Your support has emboldened me to press on and not to retreat, but to work harder to foster peace, reconciliation, and forgiveness, which are essential for the restoration of normalcy in our polity,” Fubara said.

He continued: “We cannot afford to continue in a state of political tension and crisis. Let us heal, let us forgive, let us reconcile and let us move forward together in unity for the progress of our dear Rivers State.”

Fubara’s remarks come in the aftermath of his suspension by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025. The president declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing months of governance paralysis caused by deepening political infighting and security threats.

Alongside Fubara, his deputy and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly were also suspended in what the presidency described as a necessary measure to restore order.

Despite his suspension, Fubara has remained vocal, continuing to engage with the public and reaffirm his administration’s commitment to peace and development. His latest speech marks a significant tone shift, aimed at quelling tensions and signaling readiness to chart a new path forward.

During his address, Fubara outlined key accomplishments of his administration in the face of adversity.

He cited progress in healthcare infrastructure, public education reforms, rural electrification, youth empowerment, and gender inclusion.

“While the crisis may have slowed us down at certain moments, we remained resolute in delivering service to the people,” he said.

He also reassured residents that despite political distractions, the machinery of government had not come to a halt.

“We have continued to operate within the bounds of the Constitution. We complied with judicial decisions, implemented agreed resolutions, and we have remained accountable to the people,” he added.

Fubara urged all stakeholders—traditional leaders, political actors, community groups, and civil society—to join in fostering a culture of tolerance, dialogue, and mutual respect.

“This state belongs to all of us. We cannot build a prosperous Rivers State in a climate of perpetual conflict,” he said.

The call for healing comes at a critical moment as the state awaits further decisions from the presidency and judiciary on the future of its suspended leadership and governance structure.

Initial reactions to Fubara’s speech have been mixed. Some residents praised the governor for taking a reconciliatory stance, while others criticized the administration’s handling of the crisis. Nonetheless, his message of unity and healing has resonated with many who see it as a step toward stability.

As Rivers State stands at a political crossroads, Governor Fubara’s plea to “turn the page” underscores the urgent need for reconciliation and focused governance. Whether his call for healing will be embraced by all parties remains to be seen, but it signals a possible path toward peace in one of Nigeria’s most politically volatile states.
