IGP Egbetokun Commissions 50 Operational Vehicles for Police EOD-CBRN Unit

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has commissioned 50 operational vehicles for the Nigeria Police Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit.

The commissioning ceremony, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, marks a significant step in enhancing the operational capability of the unit tasked with responding to explosive threats and hazardous materials across the country.

Speaking at the event, IGP Egbetokun emphasized the importance of equipping specialized units with modern resources to effectively respond to the country’s evolving security challenges.

He noted that the new vehicles would support rapid deployment, improve mobility, and strengthen the unit’s overall response effectiveness in emergency situations.

The EOD-CBRN Unit plays a critical role in managing threats involving weapons of mass destruction and other hazardous substances.

The acquisition of these vehicles reflects the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to modernizing its operations and building a robust response framework for high-risk incidents.

This development also follows recent collaborations between the Nigeria Police and international partners. Earlier this year, the Force worked with the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) to develop a national training curriculum for the EOD-CBRN Formation.

The curriculum focuses on detection, investigation, interdiction, and neutralization of threats involving chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear materials.

In March, officers of the EOD-CBRN Unit also underwent specialized Explosive Ordnance Risk Education training, conducted in partnership with the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the British High Commission, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The training aimed to build local capacity and promote public safety by educating communities on the dangers posed by unexploded ordnance.

The commissioning of these 50 vehicles signals a continued investment in national security infrastructure and demonstrates IGP Egbetokun’s resolve to equip the Nigeria Police Force with the tools needed to respond to complex threats in a dynamic security environment.
