House of Reps Orders Probe Into Deteriorating State of Nigeria’s Diplomatic Mission in the U.S.

The House of Representatives has ordered an immediate investigation into the declining condition of Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in the United States, expressing strong concerns over the state of the facilities and operations.

During plenary on Tuesday, lawmakers described the situation as a “national embarrassment” and a significant threat to Nigeria’s international reputation.

The resolution followed a motion raised on the floor, highlighting widespread reports of poor infrastructure, operational inefficiencies, and neglect within the embassy and consulate offices across the U.S.

According to the House, the diplomatic missions — which are meant to serve as symbols of Nigeria’s sovereignty and global presence — have instead become sources of ridicule due to their deteriorating physical state and substandard service delivery.

“The image of Nigeria abroad is being severely damaged by the unacceptable condition of our diplomatic missions.

“We cannot allow our embassies to continue operating in such disgraceful conditions. This is not just a maintenance issue — it is a matter of national dignity and security,” one lawmaker stated during the debate.

The House Committee on Foreign Affairs has been mandated to conduct a comprehensive assessment of all Nigerian diplomatic facilities in the United States, including the embassy in Washington D.C. and consulates in cities such as New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.

The committee is expected to identify the root causes of the decline, recommend measures for urgent refurbishment and reforms, and report back to the House within four weeks.

This move comes amid growing frustration among Nigerians in the diaspora who have voiced complaints about poor services, delays in passport processing, and the unprofessional conduct of some embassy staff.

Observers say the outcome of the investigation could set a precedent for the overhaul of other Nigerian diplomatic missions facing similar challenges around the world.
