Ebonyi Man Charged to Court for Allegedly Killing Uncle, Drinking His Blood

A 40-year-old man, Emmanuel Nwedu, was on Tuesday, May 27, arraigned before the Magistrate Court 11 in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, for the gruesome murder of his uncle and the alleged consumption of the victim’s blood.

The shocking incident reportedly took place on Friday, May 24, in Uboenyim community, located in the Ebonyi Local Government Area of the state.

During the court proceedings, the Senior State Counsel, Emmanuel Alo, informed the court that the accused willfully murdered his uncle in cold blood.

He further alleged that after committing the heinous act, Nwedu proceeded to drink the deceased’s blood, a detail that has left the community in horror and disbelief.

The charge, which borders on murder and cannibalistic behavior, was read to the defendant in court.

However, due to the gravity of the offense and the court’s jurisdiction, the plea of the accused was not taken.

Magistrate Nnenna Onuoha ordered that Nwedu be remanded in a correctional facility and directed the police to transfer the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The court adjourned the matter to a later date pending the outcome of the DPP’s review.

The Uboenyim community remains in shock, as residents struggle to come to terms with the chilling details of the case. Local leaders have called for calm and assured that justice will be pursued in accordance with the law.

If found guilty in a higher court, Nwedu could face the death penalty under Nigerian law, as murder is a capital offense.
