Tinubu Lauds SEDC’s Progress, Breaks 54-Year Jinx with Commission

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed satisfaction with the progress of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), following a briefing on its 100-day performance report by Mark Okoye, a key figure in the Commission’s leadership.

During the high-level briefing, Okoye presented the SEDC’s ambitious plans and achievements, highlighting a bold vision to catalyze a $200 billion regional economy.

This vision is being pursued through strategic collaboration with state governments and private sector partners.

President Tinubu commended the Commission’s alignment with the federal government’s #RenewedHope agenda and emphasized the importance of synchronizing SEDC’s initiatives with the aspirations of the South East region.

“This moment is deeply significant, particularly for students of history. Since the end of the Nigerian civil war in 1970, no Nigerian President—military or civilian—has granted the South East’s longstanding request for a development commission focused on reconstruction and rehabilitation. Mr. President has broken that 54-year jinx. Thank you, Boss,” Okoye stated.

The establishment and operationalization of the SEDC mark a historic milestone, addressing decades-long calls for equitable development and rehabilitation in a region historically affected by conflict and marginalization.

President Tinubu’s directive was clear and forward-looking: “Fast-track execution and deliver impact.”

The South East Development Commission is now expected to play a transformative role in infrastructure, economic development, and social reconstruction across the South East states.
