Onabamiro immortalised for Scientific Feats Four Decades After Demise

In a grand ceremony held at the prestigious University of Ibadan, dignitaries gathered to pay homage to the late Professor Sanya Onabamiro, a trailblazing scientist and policy formulator, four decades after his passing.
The event was attended by notable figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and immediate past Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.
The university’s management took the opportunity to unveil the newly named Administrative block and Postgraduate College, which now bears Professor Onabamiro’s name, in recognition of his profound impact on the education sector.
This gesture was widely applauded, with Obasanjo praising the institution’s decision, describing the late professor as a “beacon of excellence” whose legacy continues to inspire generations.
Amosun, in his remarks, acknowledged Onabamiro’s pivotal role in shaping education policy, particularly in the Western region, where his research on Guineaworm disease had far-reaching implications.
The former governor’s tribute highlighted the significance of Onabamiro’s work, which has left an indelible mark on the academic community.
University of Ibadan’s Vice-Chancellor, Idowu Olayinka, also extolled Onabamiro’s virtues, citing his groundbreaking contributions to the field of education.
Olayinka emphasized that the decision to name the college after the late professor was a testament to his enduring legacy and a celebration of his commitment to academic excellence.
Enitan Onabamiro, one of the late professor’s children, offered a poignant reflection on her father’s life and legacy, remembering him as a devoted family man, brilliant scholar, and champion of excellence.
She also highlighted his tireless advocacy for the promotion of the Yoruba language, suggesting that reviving this policy could have numerous benefits for the community.
