Lagos Plans Traffic Diversions for ECOWAS at 50
The Lagos State Government has announced temporary traffic diversions in Victoria Island from Tuesday, May 27 to Thursday, May 29, 2025, as part of logistics for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The high-profile regional event, hosted in Lagos, is expected to attract dignitaries including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is the current Chairman of ECOWAS.
The celebration will take place at two major venues: the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and Eko Hotels and Suites, both located in the upscale Victoria Island area of the city.
To ensure smooth vehicular movement and the safety of attendees, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rolled out detailed diversion plans, urging motorists to use alternate routes during the event period.
Motorists are advised to detour from Eko Hotel roundabout via Adetokunbo Ademola Street to the Civic Centre. From there, they can access Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, proceeding to Bonny Camp Roundabout. An alternative route is through the Falomo ramp beside the Nigerian Law School.
Those exiting Ajose Adeogun or Adetokunbo Ademola are advised to use Sanusi Fafunwa Street and connect to Akin Adesola Road. A left turn at the junction leads to Ahmadu Bello Way or Adeola Odeku, while a right turn allows access to Falomo Bridge or the Law School route.
From Lagos Continental Hotel to Bonny Camp, motorists should use Kofo Abayomi Street to Kilimanjaro Junction on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road. From there, they can turn left to reach Bonny Camp or right to continue toward Lekki.
From Bonny Camp to Kofo Abayomi Street, the approach is via Ozumba Mbadiwe Road with a right turn at Kilimanjaro Junction to access Lagos Continental Hotel.
To access Eko Hotel from Independence or McEwen Bridge, motorists should turn left at the IMB building on Ahmadu Bello Way, near Atlantic City, connect to Akin Adesola Road, and proceed through inner connecting roads.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has assured the public that traffic officers will be strategically deployed across affected routes to ensure smooth movement and provide necessary assistance. The public is urged to comply with directives, use designated alternative routes, and leave early to avoid delays.
The ECOWAS 50th Anniversary marks five decades of regional integration, economic cooperation, and peacekeeping efforts among West African nations. Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, was chosen as the host city to reflect the country’s leadership role in the regional bloc.
This event also underscores Lagos State’s continued relevance as a regional hub for diplomacy, trade, and international engagement.
