Adeyanju Bombs Peter Obi, ‘Obidients’ Over Alleged Social Mob Attack on Sowore
Human rights activist and political commentator, Deji Adeyanju, has strongly criticized Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and his supporters, popularly known as the “Obidients”, over what he described as coordinated online attacks against activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.
Adeyanju’s comments come in the wake of renewed controversy surrounding the conduct of Obi’s supporters on social media, particularly towards critics and opposition figures.
According to Adeyanju, Sowore has become the latest target of what he termed “digital mob attacks” fueled by political intolerance within the Obidient movement.
“The attacks on Sowore are a reflection of the growing toxicity in our political space, enabled by leaders who refuse to call their followers to order.
“Peter Obi must take responsibility for the climate of hostility that is being nurtured under his watch,” Adeyanju said in a statement posted to his social media pages.
The development follows recent claims by Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, who alleged that Obi not only failed to rein in his supporters during the 2023 election campaign but actively encouraged their behavior. Soyinka stated that Obi was aware of and indirectly supported the online harassment of dissenting voices.
Adeyanju referenced these allegations, accusing Obi of enabling what he called “a culture of cyber-bullying and political intimidation,” and warned that such behavior undermines democratic principles and open dialogue.
“This is no longer about politics. It is about the future of civil discourse in Nigeria. If we allow this behavior to go unchecked, we are setting a dangerous precedent,” Adeyanju added.
