Port Harcourt Refinery to Halt Operations for a Month Overhaul

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has disclosed plans to temporarily halt operations at the Port Harcourt Refining Company for a period of one month.

This move, according to Olufemi Soneye, the company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, is aimed at conducting a thorough maintenance and sustainability assessment of the facility, commencing on May 24.

Soneye emphasized that the company is collaborating with key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, to guarantee the efficiency and transparency of the maintenance exercise.

He reassured the public that the NNPC remains committed to providing sustainable energy security for the nation.

Meanwhile, local fuel retailers in Eleme, where the refinery is situated, had expressed opposition to the planned shutdown, alleging sabotage by certain officials.

However, Soneye countered these claims, explaining that the maintenance is essential for ensuring the safe and sustainable operation of the refinery.

The NNPC has assured the public that it has sufficient stockpiles of petroleum products, including diesel and kerosene, to meet demand during the shutdown period.

The company has pledged to provide regular updates on the maintenance exercise through its official channels, including its website and media platforms.
