Massive Protest Erupts in Makurdi over Killing of Final Year Student
A massive protest erupted in Makurdi on Wednesday as youths took to the streets to demand justice for the killing of 23-year-old Emmanuella Ahenjir, a final year student of the Federal University, Wukari.
The young woman was fatally shot by a police officer on Friday morning at the Wurukum roundabout in Makurdi.
According to eyewitnesses, Miss Ahenjir was travelling in a car with friends when they attempted to evade a police checkpoint.
As the vehicle sped away, a police officer fired a shot that struck Miss Ahenjir, killing her instantly. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from the public, with many calling for accountability and justice.
The protest, which drew a large crowd of youths, was peaceful but emotive, with demonstrators carrying placards and chanting slogans demanding justice for Miss Ahenjir.
The protesters marched through the streets of Makurdi, converging on the state police headquarters to express their grievances.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Emenari Ifeanyi, has ordered a detailed investigation into the case. He assured the friends and family of the deceased that he is committed to unraveling the truth and ensuring that the rule of law prevails.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Miss Ahenjir, and we condemn the actions of the police officer responsible for her death.
“We will leave no stone unturned in our investigation, and we will ensure that justice is served.”
The killing of Miss Ahenjir has raised concerns about police brutality and the use of excessive force by law enforcement officers in Nigeria. The incident has also sparked a national conversation about the need for police reform and greater accountability within the force.
