Akpabio Dismisses Impeachment Rumours, Endorses Tinubu for Second Term

Senate President Says Tinubu Will Be Re-Elected in 2027

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed suggestions of a possible impeachment against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, firmly asserting that the National Assembly holds no such plan.

Instead, Akpabio gave a ringing endorsement of the President’s performance and expressed confidence in his re-election come 2027.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Progressive Governance Summit held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, Akpabio addressed growing speculation about discontent in the legislature.

He declared that the National Assembly is united in its support for Tinubu’s leadership.

“If this president has done well, is it not us (National Assembly) that will say so? If he has not done well, is it not us that will give him notice of impeachment? We are not giving him notice of impeachment.

“We are giving him notice that it was difficult for you in 2023, but in 2027 I see everything turning around—the number of states that are coming to join you,” Akpabio stated.

Akpabio also suggested that the APC is gaining traction nationally, with even lawmakers from opposition parties indicating interest in defecting to the ruling party.

He cited an unnamed senator from the Labour Party who, he claimed, privately requested to join the APC.

“As I was leaving, one senator was dragging my dress today. He said, ‘please take me there,’ and I said you can’t come now. He is a Labour senator but I don’t want to mention his name,” Akpabio said humorously, drawing laughter from the audience.

The Senate President’s remarks were echoed by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, who also endorsed President Tinubu for a second term, praising his commitment to reforms and national development.

Adding further weight to the endorsement, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who represented the Progressive Governors’ Forum at the summit, pledged the collective support of APC governors for Tinubu’s 2027 campaign.

“That the governors produced by the APC are hereby charged to take responsibility to market all federal government policies and occupy all the political space in their domains, win all elections in their states come 2027,” Uzodimma stated.

With strong endorsements from both chambers of the National Assembly and the backing of APC governors, President Tinubu appears to have consolidated his political base ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ruling party is projecting confidence, unity, and an expanding influence across Nigeria’s political landscape.

Akpabio’s remarks have effectively quashed any rumours of impeachment while setting the tone for a robust re-election campaign for President Tinubu.
