Iran, US to Resume Nuclear Talks in Rome Amid Standoff Over Uranium Enrichment

Iran and the United States are set to hold the fifth round of their nuclear negotiations this Friday in Rome, as both sides seek to overcome deep divisions over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

The talks, confirmed by Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr Albusaidi, underscore Oman’s continuing role as a discreet mediator between Washington and Tehran.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has also formally confirmed its participation, despite persistent disagreements surrounding uranium enrichment.

At the heart of the dispute is Iran’s insistence on its right to continue uranium enrichment, which Tehran argues is protected under the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Iranian officials have repeatedly rejected US demands for a full cessation, with President Masoud Pezeshkian condemning Washington’s position as “bullying,” and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dismissing it as “nonsense.”

Washington, however, under President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, remains adamant that Iran halt all uranium enrichment activities.

The US cites concerns over Iran’s enrichment levels, reportedly reaching as high as 60%, dangerously close to weapons-grade material, heightening fears of nuclear proliferation.

The forthcoming discussions aim to narrow these differences, with the US seeking guarantees that Iran will not pursue nuclear weapons, while Iran demands recognition of its right to peaceful nuclear development. Both sides acknowledge that substantial obstacles remain, casting doubt on the prospects of a swift resolution.

Analysts regard the resumption of talks as a cautious but hopeful step towards de-escalating tensions in the volatile Middle East region. While the path to a comprehensive agreement remains fraught with challenges, the dialogue in Rome is seen as an important opportunity for progress.
