Oyo to Rotate Chairmanship of Traditional Rulers for Equity, Fairness
In a bid to promote fairness, equity, and unity among the traditional rulers in the state, the Oyo State House of Assembly has approved the rotation of the chairmanship of the state’s Council of Obas and Chiefs.
The approval was given during the plenary session of the House, following a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, and seconded by Hon. Olajide Akande.
The motion sought to amend the existing law governing the council to introduce a rotational system for the chairmanship position.
According to the new arrangement, the chairmanship of the council will rotate among the three senatorial districts in the state, namely Oyo Central, Oyo North, and Oyo South.
Each district will produce a chairman for a tenure of two years, after which the position will rotate to another district.
The Speaker of the House, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, explained that the decision was taken to ensure that all parts of the state are given equal opportunities to produce the chairman of the council.
He noted that the rotation will help to promote unity and cooperation among the traditional rulers and the people of the state.
The approval has been welcomed by traditional rulers and stakeholders in the state, who see it as a positive development that will strengthen the institution of traditional rulership in Oyo State.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, commended the House of Assembly for the initiative, saying it will help to reduce tension and promote harmony among the traditional rulers.
The new arrangement is expected to take effect immediately, with the current chairman of the council, Oba Francis Alao, completing his tenure before handing over to a new chairman from another senatorial district.
The development is seen as a significant milestone in the history of traditional rulership in Oyo State, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s traditional institution and the people at large.
