One Dead as Trailer Runs Into Isheri Market, Injures Several Others

Tragedy struck on Wednesday morning along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway as a trailer crashed into the busy Isheri Market in OPIC bus stop, leaving one person dead, several others injured, and properties destroyed.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when the trailer, which was traveling from Lagos, suffered brake failure and lost control, crashing into the market.

A motorcyclist who witnessed the incident described the scene as chaotic, saying the driver was unable to stop the vehicle as it approached the OPIC area.

“I was at the OPIC bus stop roundabout when the container came from Lagos and reached the OPIC bus stop.

“When he was coming, there was no traffic on the express, but he didn’t have brakes. When he tried to enter the estate, he crashed into the market and killed a person,” the motorcyclist said.

The eyewitness confirmed that the driver was not being chased by anyone at the time of the incident, ruling out any possibility of a high-speed pursuit.

“No one was chasing him, it’s only him that was coming,” the motorcyclist said.

The incident has caused widespread destruction, with several stalls and properties damaged. Emergency services, including the police and ambulance, have been deployed to the scene to provide assistance and evacuate the injured.

The identity of the deceased has not been released, but eyewitnesses described the victim as a trader who was selling goods at the market. The injured have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, and their conditions are currently unknown.

The Lagos State Government has issued a statement condemning the incident and promising to investigate the cause of the brake failure.

The government has also assured that measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has also issued a statement, urging drivers to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on any journey.

The corps has also warned against reckless driving and speeding, which can lead to loss of lives and properties.

The incident has caused a significant disruption to traffic along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, with motorists advised to take alternative routes to avoid the area.

The police have also deployed officers to the scene to manage traffic and maintain order.

As the investigation into the incident continues, the families of the victims and the injured are calling for justice and compensation.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians taking to social media to express their condolences and demand greater action to prevent such incidents in the future.
