House of Representatives Passes Motion for Immediate Implementation of Pension Increments

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to promptly implement all approved pension increments and release withheld palliative funds meant for pensioners across the country.

During a plenary session on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Whip Ibrahim Ayokunle Isiaka moved a motion highlighting the hardships pensioners face due to delays in the payment of approved pension increases and withheld welfare packages.

He reminded lawmakers that in October 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a ₦25,000 wage increase and an additional ₦32,000 pension increment for federal pensioners. However, many retirees are yet to receive these payments.

The House expressed concern over the worsening living conditions of pensioners, many of whom struggle to meet basic needs and face declining health because of financial difficulties.

Lawmakers emphasized that failure to implement these measures undermines the constitutional mandate for social justice and citizen welfare.

In its resolution, the House directed key government agencies — including the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Accountant General’s office, Central Bank of Nigeria, and the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) — to ensure immediate disbursement of all approved pension increments and release of withheld palliatives.

The House also mandated the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the National Pension Commission to conduct a comprehensive audit of pension payments to enhance transparency and accountability.

Additionally, lawmakers called on state governments to prioritize pension payments and welfare programs for retirees in their jurisdictions.

They encouraged pensioners’ associations and other stakeholders to work closely with government bodies to monitor enforcement of pensioners’ rights.

This move underscores the House’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of pensioners and ensuring that those who have served the nation receive their rightful entitlements without further delay.
