FG Plans to Restructure Underperforming DISCOs

The Federal Government has announced plans to restructure underperforming Distribution Companies (Discos) and tighten enforcement of performance benchmarks.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made this disclosure in a statement, stating that the move is aimed at ensuring that Discos meet their obligations to consumers and improve the overall performance of the power sector.

According to the Minister, the restructuring process will involve a thorough review of the operations of underperforming Discos, with a view to identifying areas of improvement and implementing corrective measures.

The government will also work with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to tighten enforcement of performance benchmarks, including penalties for non-compliance.

“The Federal Government is committed to ensuring that the power sector operates efficiently and effectively, and that consumers receive the best possible service. We will not tolerate any Disco that fails to meet its obligations to consumers, and we will take all necessary steps to ensure that they are held accountable,” Minister Adelabu said.

The Minister’s announcement is seen as a major development in the power sector, and is expected to have a significant impact on the operations of Discos across the country.

The move is also expected to improve the overall performance of the power sector, and enhance the experience of electricity consumers nationwide.

The Minister warned that any Disco that fails to meet these benchmarks will face penalties, including fines and potential revocation of their license.

The announcement has been welcomed by stakeholders in the power sector, who have long called for greater accountability and improved performance from Discos. The move is seen as a positive step towards achieving the Federal Government’s goal of providing reliable and affordable electricity to all Nigerians.

In a statement, the Nigerian Electricity Consumers Association (NECA) commended the Minister’s announcement, saying that it is a “welcome development” that will help to improve the experience of electricity consumers across the country.

“We have long advocated for greater accountability and improved performance from Discos, and we are pleased to see the Federal Government taking concrete steps to address these issues.

“We look forward to working with the government and other stakeholders to ensure that the power sector operates efficiently and effectively, and that consumers receive the best possible service,” NECA said.
