NASU, SSANU Reject Sharing Formula in FG’s N50 Billion for University Based Unions

The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non Academic Staff Union of Allied institutions (NASU) has rejected the distribution formula adopted by the Federal Government for the disbursement of the ₦50 billion approved for university-based unions.

The fund, which was meant to be shared among SSANU, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), has been allocated in a manner that the unions consider unfair.

According to the distribution formula, 80% of the fund, amounting to ₦40 billion, has been allocated to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), while the remaining 20%, amounting to ₦10 billion, is to be shared among SSANU, NASU, and NAAT.

The non-academic unions have expressed disappointment and frustration with the distribution formula, describing it as “unjust” and “unfair”.

In a statement, the unions stated that the formula does not reflect the true needs and requirements of the non-academic staff, who are also critical to the smooth operation of the universities.

The SSANU and NASU have rejected the distribution formula, stating that it is unacceptable and does not address the concerns of the non-academic staff.

The unions have called for a review of the formula, arguing that it is essential to ensure that the fund is distributed in a fair and equitable manner.

“We are shocked and disappointed by the distribution formula adopted by the Federal Government.

“The allocation of 80% of the fund to ASUU is unjust and unfair, and does not reflect the true needs and requirements of the non-academic staff. We demand a review of the formula to ensure that the fund is distributed in a fair and equitable manner,” said the SSANU and NASU in a joint statement.

The rejection of the distribution formula by the non-academic unions may lead to further industrial action in the universities, as the unions may feel compelled to protest against the perceived injustice.

The development may also affect the smooth operation of the universities, as the non-academic staff may withdraw their services in protest.

The Federal Government has been urged to review the distribution formula and ensure that the fund is distributed in a fair and equitable manner.

The government has been advised to engage with the unions and other stakeholders to find a solution that addresses the concerns of all parties involved.

The rejection of the distribution formula by the non-academic unions has added a new dimension to the ongoing crisis in the university system.

The development may lead to further industrial action and may affect the smooth operation of the universities.

The Federal Government has been urged to find a solution that addresses the concerns of all parties involved.
