Ebonyi Government Raises Salaries of Newly Employed Doctors to ₦500,000

In a landmark move to strengthen the healthcare system and address the shortage of medical personnel, the Ebonyi State Government has announced an increase in the monthly salary of newly employed doctors to ₦500,000.

Governor Francis Nwifuru made the announcement during the launch of a comprehensive health sector reform initiative, which includes a state-wide health activation campaign, the introduction of a Drug Revolving Fund (DRF), and the distribution of modern medical equipment to general hospitals across the state.

The governor stated that the salary adjustment is part of his administration’s commitment to improving working conditions and retaining skilled professionals within the state’s healthcare system.

“We recognize the dedication of our health workers, and this salary increase is both a reward and an incentive.

“By investing in our medical personnel, we are investing in the lives and health of our people,” Governor Nwifuru said.

As part of the healthcare overhaul, the state has employed 195 medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists, who have already been deployed to various health facilities.

Governor Nwifuru also unveiled medical supplies and equipment worth over ₦1 billion, including hospital beds, patient monitors, and other life-saving tools, aimed at enhancing service delivery in public hospitals.

He emphasized that these investments are crucial to the delivery of quality healthcare services, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The newly introduced Drug Revolving Fund is designed to ensure a consistent and reliable supply of essential medicines.

According to the governor, over 60 percent of these drugs have already been delivered to healthcare centers, with full distribution expected soon.

In his address, the governor urged community leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society groups to actively monitor and protect public healthcare investments, warning that any form of diversion or mismanagement will be met with strict consequences.

Looking ahead, Governor Nwifuru revealed plans to establish specialist hospitals in each of the state’s three senatorial zones and pursue partnerships for healthcare financing and digital health innovation to improve service efficiency.

“This is a new dawn for Ebonyi State’s healthcare system. We are building a future where quality healthcare is not a privilege but a right for every citizen,” the governor declared.

The announcement has been widely praised by healthcare workers and civil society groups, who see it as a bold and much-needed step toward sustainable health sector development in the state.
