Another Tragic Accident on Karu Bridge, Abuja

Another tragic accident occurred today, May 19, 2025, on Karu Bridge along the Nyanya-Keffi road in Abuja, leaving many feared dead and several others injured.

This incident comes just a day after a deadly tanker explosion at the same location, intensifying concerns over road safety on this critical route.

Eyewitnesses reported that the crash involved a trailer and a vehicle transporting sachet water, commonly known as “pure water.”

The trailer reportedly lost control, leading to a violent collision with the smaller vehicle. The impact of the crash caused severe damage to both vehicles, resulting in a chaotic scene as rescuers rushed to the site.

Emergency responders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), police, and local fire services, arrived swiftly to provide first aid and manage traffic, but the exact number of casualties remains unclear.

Some reports suggest multiple fatalities, though official figures are yet to be confirmed.

This latest accident follows a deadly tanker explosion on March 18, 2025, at the same Karu Bridge, which claimed several lives and destroyed multiple vehicles.

In that incident, a petrol-laden tanker lost control and exploded, igniting a massive fire that left the area in ruins.

The frequency of such accidents on this stretch of road has sparked widespread concern, with many residents and commuters calling for immediate government intervention to enhance road safety.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar recently urged the federal government to treat the ongoing accidents on Karu Bridge as a national emergency, emphasizing the need for immediate measures to prevent further tragedies.

As investigations continue, road safety experts have called for comprehensive reviews of traffic regulations, improved road maintenance, and stricter enforcement to reduce the risk of such accidents.

Many have also suggested the need for dedicated lanes for heavy-duty vehicles to prevent them from colliding with smaller cars during emergencies.

The repeated tragedies at Karu Bridge highlight the urgent need for stronger road safety measures to protect lives and prevent further loss.
