In a move aimed at recognizing and integrating academic qualifications into career advancement frameworks, the Nigeria Police Force has issued a directive to all zonal and state commands, training institutions, and selected police departments to urgently compile and forward a list of serving officers who are holders of Doctorate Degrees (Ph.D.).
According to a wireless message dated May 15, 2025, and dispatched by the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) through the Force Secretary in Abuja, the directive is tagged “MOST/IMMEDIATE” and referenced code CE:2300/FS/FHQ/ABJ/SUB.4/292. The communication, titled “Promotion General,” emphasizes the need for immediate compliance ahead of an impending promotion exercise.
The IGP is seeking the full list of Ph.D. holders serving in various police formations across the country as a matter of urgency.
The message also calls for the submission of records of officers previously posted to the respective commands for the purpose of study, including those who have earned First Degrees, Master’s Degrees, and Ph.Ds. Relevant academic certificates are also to be included in the submissions.
The deadline for submission has been set for Friday, May 30, 2025, with police formations directed to treat the matter as very important.
The directive was addressed to senior police officials and training institutions, including AIGPOLS STAFFPOL JOS, POLAC KANO, DEPPOLS in Ikeja, Kaduna, Maiduguri, Oji-River, as well as the Detective College Enugu, Police College for ICT, Refreshers Training School, and the Batons Division.
This move is believed to be part of ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to modernize, professionalize, and develop human capacity within the institution. The recognition of academic qualifications is seen as a key aspect of this effort, as it will enable the force to identify and promote officers with advanced degrees, thereby enhancing its overall effectiveness and efficiency.
