The Prosperity Girls dominated the winless Ratels, scoring four goals to seal a convincing victory and finish the six-team championship play-off tourney with 10 points.
This impressive performance propelled them from second place to first, snatching the title from Nasarawa Amazons and Edo Queens, who played out a goalless draw.
The match began with Bayelsa Queens taking the lead in the 24th minute through Vera Samuel’s goal. However, Naija Ratels equalized just before halftime, with Tumininu Adeshina scoring in the 42nd minute.
The first half ended 1-1, setting the stage for a thrilling second half.
Bayelsa Queens regained the lead just two minutes into the second half, courtesy of Mega Cynthia’s goal. Samuel then took center stage, scoring twice in six minutes to complete her hat-trick and seal the win. Her goals in the 61st and 67th minutes gave Bayelsa Queens a comfortable 4-1 lead, which they maintained until the final whistle.
The confirmation of the goalless draw between Nasarawa Amazons and Edo Queens sparked jubilation among the Bayelsa Queens players, coaches, and fans. The team celebrated their sixth NWFL title, ending a three-year wait to reclaim the championship.
The trophy was presented to the winners by Bamidele Abiodun, wife of the Ogun State Governor, alongside NWFL board members and other dignitaries. Bayelsa Queens received the N10 million grand prize, a significant reward for their hard work and dedication throughout the season.
As champions of the NWFL, Bayelsa Queens will represent Nigeria at the CAF Women’s Champions League zonal qualifiers in Côte d’Ivoire. This presents an opportunity for the team to advance to the group stage of next season’s competition, where they will face top teams from across Africa.
