NAF to Acquire 49 New Aircraft by 2026, Says Chief of Air Staff

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is set to expand its fleet significantly with the planned acquisition of 49 new aircraft over the next two years.

This was disclosed by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, during a biannual meeting with Branch Chiefs and Air Officers Commanding in Abuja.

According to Air Marshal Abubakar, the procurement aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening national security and modernizing the capabilities of the Nigerian Air Force.

“In the next two years, from December 2024 to 2026, we expect to take delivery of 49 additional platforms to further enhance our operational effectiveness,” he stated.

This move follows the successful induction of 12 aircraft into the Air Force inventory within the past year. The new additions are expected to include a mix of attack helicopters, fighter jets, transport aircraft, and surveillance platforms.

Amonthbthe platforms expected to join the fleet are 24 M-346 Fighter Ground Attack jets from Italy, with deliveries starting in early 2025;
10 AW-109 Trekker helicopters for reconnaissance and close air support roles;
12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from the United States;
Three CASA 295 transport aircraft from Spain; and
Two additional T-129 ATAK helicopters from Turkey.
Air Marshal Abubakar emphasized that the acquisitions will significantly boost the NAF’s ability to respond to the country’s evolving security threats, particularly in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and other internal security challenges.

He also highlighted the importance of innovation, discipline, and integrity within the ranks, urging officers to remain committed to professionalism and operational excellence.

The NAF’s expansion plan is part of a broader transformation initiative that includes enhancing research and development, improving maintenance infrastructure, and increasing indigenous technological capabilities.

As Nigeria continues to face complex security challenges, this strategic fleet enhancement is seen as a major step toward building a more agile, lethal, and technologically advanced air force.
