Three Opposition Lawmakers Defect to APC in House of Representatives

Three members of the House of Representatives have officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from opposition parties, further consolidating the APC’s dominance in the lower legislative chamber.
During today’s plenary session, the lawmakers formally announced their defection, citing various political alignments and strategic interests ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defectors include Hon. Oluwole Oke, formerly of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), representing Osun State; Hon. Kabiru Hassan Rumrum defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), representing Kano State; and Hon. Sani Abdullahi also from the NNPP, representing Kano State.
These defections come at a critical time as the APC seeks to solidify its position ahead of the next electoral cycle. With the addition of these three lawmakers, the APC has further expanded its majority in the House, potentially easing the passage of key legislative priorities.
Political analysts view the defections as a strategic maneuver by the lawmakers to align themselves with the ruling party, which controls both the executive and legislative arms of government.
This shift is expected to influence the political dynamics within their respective states, potentially altering the balance of power ahead of upcoming elections.
The PDP and NNPP are yet to formally respond to the defections, but the moves are likely to spark debates over party loyalty and the growing trend of political realignments in Nigerian politics.
As the 2027 elections approach, more defections and political realignments are expected, reflecting the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political landscape.
