Kaduna State University Reopens as Staff Union Suspends Strike Action

The Kaduna State University has resumed academic activities following the suspension of the strike action by the local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

This breakthrough was made possible by the state government’s decisive intervention, led by Governor Uba Sani, who has demonstrated a strong commitment to resolving the long-standing issues plaguing the institution.

A substantial financial package has been approved by the Governor, including a monthly allocation of ₦50 million to support staff welfare, as well as the release of ₦146 million to settle outstanding salary arrears and allowances for students’ industrial work experience schemes.

Furthermore, the university has been granted greater autonomy in managing its internally generated revenue, with a significant percentage to be retained for its development.

The state government has also established a high-level negotiation team, chaired by Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, to engage with the university’s unions and address the outstanding issues.

This move is seen as a major step towards finding a lasting solution to the problems that have been affecting the university for over a decade.

The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Musa, has praised Governor Sani’s leadership and responsiveness to the challenges faced by the institution, describing the government’s actions as “bold and unprecedented.”

The Vice Chancellor noted that the Governor’s commitment to education is evident in the swift and decisive measures taken to address the university’s problems, which reflects a deep understanding of the importance of education in driving development.

With the strike action suspended and the university reopened, students and staff can now look forward to a return to normal academic activities. The state government’s intervention has provided a glimmer of hope for the future of the university, and it is expected that the ongoing dialogue between the government and the unions will yield positive results, ultimately benefiting the students, staff, and the state as a whole.
