Globetrotter Rachel Jenkins Choses Lagos as Home
Rachel Jenkins, a seasoned American traveler who has visited over 30 countries, has chosen to make Lagos, Nigeria her home.
Despite initial skepticism from friends and family, Rachel has found that the cost of living in Lagos is not only affordable but also comfortable.
In an exclusive interview, Rachel revealed that she pays a relatively modest 7 million Naira (approximately $4,500 USD) for her apartment in a desirable Lagos neighborhood.
However, she noted that the total cost of renting her apartment for two years was 18,550,000 Naira (approximately $11,500 USD), which includes additional fees such as agency fees (1,400,000 Naira), legal fees (700,000 Naira), caution deposit (700,000 Naira), and service charges (1,700,000 Naira).
Rachel explained that she pays her rent in advance, which is a common practice in Nigeria, to secure her apartment. She also mentioned that her monthly expenses are relatively low, averaging around $500 USD per month.
When asked why she chose to leave America and settle in Lagos, Rachel cited the affordability and comfort of living in Nigeria. “I was surprised by how affordable and comfortable the houses are here,” she said. “I’ve traveled to many countries, but there’s something about Lagos that feels like home.”
Rachel’s decision to move to Lagos has sparked interest among expatriates and Nigerians alike, with many wondering if she’s crazy for leaving the comforts of America behind. However, Rachel is quick to defend her choice, citing the unique cultural experiences and business opportunities that Lagos has to offer.
“I’ve never felt more alive than I do here in Lagos. The energy of the city is infectious, and I’ve found that the people are warm and welcoming. Of course, there are challenges, but I believe that the benefits far outweigh the costs,” Rachel said.
Rachel’s story has inspired many to reconsider their perceptions of Nigeria and Lagos, in particular.
As the country continues to grow and develop, it’s likely that more expats will follow in Rachel’s footsteps, drawn by the promise of affordable living and exciting opportunities.
